For LCD televisions the technology used is TFT (thin film transistor) while smaller LCD display may use different technology. The lower weight quickly falling prices higher screen resolution which makes it suitable for HDTV plus lower electrical power consumption of LCDs make them competitive against plasma televisions. Plasma televisions used to dominate the large format flat panel televisions but LCD televisions are fast catching up with LCD televisions overtaking plasma televisions in the popular 40 inch plus segment where plasma televisions used to have a competitive advantage. Sharp now has a 108 inch LCD flat panel television (AQUOS brand). One disadvantage of LCD displays are that they use backlight which can never be turned off so you can never get a completely black pixel or black screen. Another disadvantage vis a vis the CRT display is the response time. CRT televisions have a response time of under 1 ms (milliseconds) while LCD display typically have response of 20 ms. However they have been able to lower it now to as low as 8 ms which is sufficient. My opinion is. LCD flat panel televisions will dominate the market but don't just depend on my opinion. I never really thought about this before but recently came across a few articles that indicate some flat televisions use more energy than good old CRT 'tube' televisions.
