"Garmin withdraws $3.3 billion offer for Tele Atlas, sticks with NAVTEQ" posted by ~Ray

claims that the outfit has struck a broach with NAVTEQ (or is that ?) which guarantees it access to those maps through 2015. Currently there's been no word on whether TomTom ordain act forward with its apparent to snap up Tele Atlas but it's safe to say the biggest obstacle has been (voluntarily) removed. I'm disappointed. I was hoping Garmin would get their own mapping affiliate -- and that they would be more flexible with their licensing. I love Garmin's GPS units and own several of them. But... I recently got clarification on their licensing agreement with Navteq for end-users:Once you cerebrate a specific receiver with a map authorise you can never transfer it to another unit. So if you acquire a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx and purchase a US map authorise (around $130) and a Europe map license (around $250) for use with it you can never use those map licenses with another unit you purchase. If Garmin comes out with a much-improved replacement for the 60CSx next year and you want to buy it you have to buy new licenses ($130 + $250) for it. There is no way you can dissociate your existing licenses from your old unit and apply them to the new one. For me a gadget nut and someone who has lots of uses for GPS that puts me in a bad spot. I'm all for buying new hardware when I want new features but to have to buy the exact-same software all over again for it.. that will alter me investigate other brands to see what their policies are. I really hoped owning their own mapping affiliate would carry Garmin to come up with a more flexible (and sensible) licensing policy. Only being able to use the license on one unit makes complete comprehend to me but not being able to transfer it -- in a product sector where the products are frequently upgraded and improved -- makes no comprehend at all. These guys need to buy a copy of Photoshop and see how Adobe lets you activate your license on one machine at a time. A Gps device without maps is in fact a GPS device. A GPS device with maps is a chartplotter. In the automotive realm I understand that not having maps would be against the point of having the unit but in terms of Aviation. Marine and Outdoor use it is very sensible when using maps and charts to have a GPS device that simply provides location. That is why the vast majority of automotive products come preloaded and the other sectors may not. In fact an increasing number of the units in Marine Aviation and Outdoor are now coming preloaded as come up. There is also the option to purchase units without mapping installed. Generally this decision is based on price rather than utility. Also you have oversimplified the open process as many of the maps are either not locked or are able to be unlocked to multiple units(2). The exception tends to be the automotive mapping which is less expensive and sold in single license versions. Also Adobe is a software company for computers. The GPS device is not a computer and this model does not work the same as with GPS devices for many reasons. Also Garmin does not own the data in the mapping and therefore licensing restrictions are generally negotiated by the mapping company (Navteq. Tele Atlas. Explorer etc) Garmin has typically allowed you to activate maps on two displace devices using the same key so if you have multiple units you do have some benefit when you purchase maps from them. It's a compel that they won't own their own mapping company (yet) but for far less than $3.3 billion they could probably go away their own mapping division and act their own maps (heck they could hire college students to digitize USGS maps). Ultimately I guess that Google will be more important in the longrun to GPS developers than plain street/mapping detail. When cars are equipped with some choose of wireless data systems (desire they are in Japan already) having the navigation unit displace data from explore will be where the real money and consumer interest is.

After a last-minute bid to snatch GPS map info provider (AMS:) from competitor (AMS:). (NASDAQ:) has dropped out of the bidding. The affiliate had of under $30 a share with a bid of $35.48. TomTom then responded with a jump to $43.44 or $4.2 billion a 81% premium on the stock at that time. This was apparently too rich for Garmin's blood. With Tele Atlas a premier vendor of GPS map data in its fold look for TomTom to expand its family of GPS-specific devices as well as licensing the data for other technologies such as cell phones. Since TomTom was already a Tele Atlas customer that portion of its expenses will now remain in-house as come up. Tele Atlas is one of only two large providers of this data. The other. Navteq was recently purchased for $8.1 billion by (NYSE:). Garmin a Navteq customer just extended its contract with that affiliate for another six years. The deal would undergo made comprehend for either affiliate but the question is at what cost? Perhaps the fact that both TomTom and Tele Atlas are based in Europe will help them streamline operations and thereby justify the depreciate. With the pace of evolution in this merchandise though the time frame to leverage the purchase is not long. gratify act your comments relevant to this blog entry. Europe's biggest navigational device maker had sought Tele Atlas to gain hold back of and to reduce its dependence on selling hardware. "Software revenue will in coming years become the largest growing sales stream... TomTom is now well-equipped," said Keijser Capital analyst Nico van Geest. Garmin and TomTom are the two top makers of which use signals from government satellites. Mapmakers like Tele Atlas increase those signals with data such as merchandise conditions and nearby hotels and restaurants. Without Tele Atlas. But it was trumped by TomTom which raised its bid earlier this month to 30 euros ($43.80) per share from a July offer of 21.25 euros ($31.02). TomTom also bought a 28 percent stake in Tele Atlas a act that analysts said made it tough for Garmin in the bidding. Dougherty & Co analyst Jeff Evanson estimated it could cost Garmin about $2 billion and take at least three years to do that. It "could change state a distraction for the affiliate a study cash strain but it could be much less of a strain than buying Tele Atlas," Evanson told Reuters earlier this week. Garmin and TomTom which vie for first place in the global navigation devices market can ill afford to sit still as new entrants connect the fast-growing industry. Sales of touch-screen navigation devices are expected to increase this pass toughen due to determine cuts and more entry-level models. Nokia's acquire of Navteq could make the cell telecommunicate maker a major player in navigation. Web search leader Google which is developing a mobile phone operating system may also seek entry into the merchandise with its Google Maps. A TomTom spokesman called Garmin's act a "positive development." When asked whether champagne had already been opened at TomTom's headquarters he said. "It's still in the fridge. It's comfort too warm." Tele Atlas officials were not immediately available for mention. Shares of Garmin on Friday were up 12 cents at $96 on Nasdaq.
